I am passionate about teaching this aspect of painting because so many artists struggle with it. Each day I will present a different key element, building toward a comprehensive overview by the week's end. From the Munsell notation system to the use of color strings and a limited palette, you will complete a sequential series of practical exercises resulting in a newfound sense of confidence.
The logic of the Munsell system: seeing color through the lens of Hue, Value, and Chroma
Color strings and how they relate to a specific motif
The use of a limited palette
Color perception as it relates to light and form in a simple still life subject
The use of a color checker in creating accurate color from life
As a bonus, you will tube a string of color of your choice to take back with you to you own studio.
With the exception of oil paint, all the materials you will need for the class are included. Below is the list of my personal palette colors. These are the ones I recommend for the class should you decide to bring your own paint.

If you don't want to bring your own paint, you have an option to pay a $100 lab fee for use of a communal group of paints.
To ensure you receive individual guidance, we limit the class size to ten students. This also provides an intimate and supportive environment for exploration.
Rush Hollow Studio is tucked into the rolling countryside of southwestern Vermont near the New York State border. This whole area provides rich inspiration for painting, drawing, and other creative pursuits. A creek with several small waterfalls, farm fields, woods, gardens, and wildlife habitat are all within walking distance of the barn.
The studio is within driving distance of both Boston and New York (but a world away!). Click on this link for information about traveling by car, rail, or air: Traveling to Rush Hollow
Consider Bardwell Farm, walking distance (less than a mile) from our place, has two Airbnb listings, Pond Cottage and Smithy Cottage.
There are many wonderful places to stay in the towns of Dorset (just 20 minutes away) and Manchester (a scenic 30-minute drive). Below are links to nearby accommodations as well as a sampling of restaurants and cafes:
If you have questions about anything, including logistics, please feel free to email us any time.
Cheers,
Kathy & Parker
Riding around Rush Hollow Studio is superb.
If you will be traveling with someone who likes to ride bikes, Parker can serve up daily rides, short or long, flat or hilly, slow or as fast. Whether it's riding on the local paved roads, gravel roads, or MTB trails, cycling around Southwestern Vermont and upstate New York is fantastic.
We invite all students to join the dedicated online community reserved for workshop participants. The community forum will make it easy for you to share your work, ask questions, and stay in touch with your fellow students after the class.
We understand that life can get in the way of even the best-laid plans. If your life circumstances change, you may request a full refund up until August 14, 2026, after which you can receive a credit toward our online courses or a future workshop at Rush Hollow Studio.
