Creating Atmosphere in Painting

The surface of a painting is like a fossil of the painter’s process. Creating believable form in atmospheric space is one of the most magical ways to translate our perceptual experience. In this 2+ hour workshop, I will present some conceptual and technical ways to explore this beautiful method of working with paint. Live on Zoom, Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 11:00 EST.

"How does one build form in space?"

Creating atmosphere in painting is not a technical “trick.”  It is the result of a deep search for form in space and can only be achieved through exploration. I will be sharing some of the applications that I have found helpful though my many years of trial and error.

What we will cover:

  • Indirect layering

  • Scraping and sanding

  • Working wet over dry

  • Oiling out

  • “Reading” the space

  • Finding form in the “ghost image”

  • Translucent scumbles

  • Working into a glaze

  • Finding form with edges

This class will be live online with question and answer via the chat option. You will have access to the HD recording with unlimited viewing.
