Rush Hollow Studio 2026 Rose Painting Workshop

Monday-Friday, July 13-17, 2026, 9:30 am to 5 pm

Take a deep dive into the beautiful but challenging subject of Garden Roses. The varieties I grow are not commercially available as subjects for painting, and they are truly exquisite.

This class will focus on the skills needed to simplify and grasp the essential structure of these complex forms. If you have been intrigued but intimidated by this subject, this workshop is for you!

Open to all painters. The class is capped at eight people, and I tailor my teaching to meet the needs of each student regardless of experience.

Five-Day Immersion

July 13-17, 2026

Despite their delicate appearance, Garden Roses are small miracles of botanical architecture. They have been my muse for many years and continue to inspire the work I do.

During this week-long immersive workshop, students will gain the confidence necessary to tackle them in future studio work. You'll learn how to set up the subject in the proper light, look for the underlying masses, and minimize unnecessary detail. Among the techniques presented will be:

  • Set up and lighting

  • Wash-in technique

  • Essential drawing

  • Seeing and mixing accurate color

  • Paint handling techniques

All Supplies Provided

We'll stock the class supplies you need to minimize the hassle and expense of bringing your own. The materials list includes the following:

  • Indoor easels, tables, lights, vases, flowers, oil paints, mediums, solvents, palettes, and painting surfaces.

We'll also provide a selection of brushes and palette knives, but you may want to bring your own. You may also choose to bring your own outdoor easel and any other favorite materials as well.

We'll provide a light lunch each day and a celebratory farewell dinner prepared by Chef Parker, aka the "Guy Behind the Camera."

Personal exploration in a small, supportive environment

To ensure you receive individual guidance, we limit the class size to ten students. This also provides an intimate and supportive environment for exploration.

Sources of inspiration at Rush Hollow Studio

Rush Hollow Studio is tucked into the rolling countryside of southwestern Vermont near the New York State border. This whole area provides rich inspiration for painting, drawing, and other creative pursuits. A creek with several small waterfalls, farm fields, woods, gardens, and wildlife habitat are all within walking distance of the barn.

Traveling with a cyclist?

The riding around Rush Hollow Studio is superb.

If you are here with someone who likes to ride bikes, Parker can serve up daily rides, short or long, flat or hilly, slow or as fast as he can go. Whether it's riding on the local paved roads, gravel roads, or MTB trails, cycling around southwestern Vermont and upstate New York is fantastic.
