Painting with Color Strings

Transform your ability to create highly nuanced color for any painting subject. In this two-day interactive class, Kathy will demonstrate the method she uses to identify naturalistic color and create a string palette for a simple still life. Live on Zoom September 16 and 23, 2026, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm ET.

How do Color Strings make painting from life easier and more fluid?

I will be answering this question and many others in this two-day demonstration workshop.

Working from a single object still life, we will methodically isolate the elements of hue, value, and chroma needed to create a specific palette. You can determine the component colors of ANY subject using this method.

Perceiving and mixing color need not be a confusing or frustrating process. If you have struggled to paint naturalistic color from life, this class is for you!

How will this class work?

During two live Zoom meetings, I will demonstrate how to create and use a specific color string palette for our subject. You will be able to ask questions during the live class.

At the end of the first session, I will give you some homework. In the week between sessions, you can post images of your work to the class's community forum where I will review it and make comments.

The usefulness of color strings will become clear as we bring our still life to a nuanced and complex stage in the second class.

Note: This is a comprehensive follow-up to the one-day workshop, Introduction to Color Strings.

You will be able to review the full HD recordings of Painting with Color Strings as often as you like.

Enroll and we'll mail you a pair of our Color Checkers!

We created a set of Color Checkers that are a simple but very useful tool. They allow you to isolate and compare the colors of the subject with those on your painting.
