Creating Atmosphere in Painting

The surface of a painting is like a fossil of the painter’s process. Creating believable form in atmospheric space is one of the most magical ways to translate our perceptual experience. In this 2+ hour workshop, I will present some conceptual and technical ways to explore this beautiful method of working with paint. Live on Zoom, Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 11:00 EST.

Testimonials

"Mind Bending"

"Kathy is one of the finest artists I know. She constantly pushes herself to understand and explore the subject. How she handles color is mind bending. She's absolutely a master."
Scott Conary
Acclaimed painter and teacher

"Transformative"

"Before I took Kathy's workshop, I was feeling  stuck. Her workshop was so robust, I'm still digesting the lessons. She gave me the tools to get out of my head and paint through my heart. She's transformed how I paint."

Obsessed with Roses

Kathleen Speranza has explored many subjects in her more than 30 years of painting and teaching, but roses are her current obsession. During her distinguished academic career, she taught painting and drawing for all college levels. She was on the faculty of the Rhode Island School of Design for the past several years.

Her paintings explore the visual language of space, light, color, and form as it relates to specific subjects from nature. The most recent paintings investigate the poetic potential of botanical life. Her works relating to garden roses, with their extreme subtlety of color and structure, are perhaps her best-known images.

Her works appear in public and private collections in the U.S. and the U.K. Speranza holds a BFA from Boston University and an MFA from Yale. Her work can be seen on Facebook and Instagram. She lives and works in West Pawlet, Vermont, with her husband, Parker Heath.
